Blending music, activism, and cultural storytelling, The Slants have left an enduring mark on music and civil rights history.

The Slants are an American dance-rock band formed in Portland, Oregon in 2006 by musician Simon Tam. Known for their synth-driven sound and innovative performances, the band became internationally recognized for their role in the landmark Supreme Court case Matal v. Tam, which reinforced First Amendment protections for expressive trademarks.

Although the band retired from live touring in 2019 and released their final album in 2023, founding members continue to create, perform, and mentor artists through The Slants Foundation, supporting underrepresented voices in music and the arts.

Their music and story are included in the permanent collections of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and its library, and exhibitions have appeared at the National Constitution Center, First Amendment Museum, Wing Luke Museum, and Portland Chinatown Museum. 
  • Philanthropy & Mentorship: 100% of royalties from the band go to The Slants Foundation, a nonprofit organizarion that supports emerging artists and underrepresented communities through mentorship, advocacy, and creative initiatives.
  • Since 2006, The Slants have appeared on over 1,500 stages across four continents.
